3-Day Surkhandarya Tour: Termez, Buddhist Heritage, Ancient Bactria & the Afghanistan Border

This tour is ideal for travelers interested in history, archaeology, ancient civilizations and world religions. Unlike Uzbekistan's famous Silk Road cities, Surkhandarya remains largely untouched by mass tourism while preserving an extraordinary concentration of unique historical monuments, many of which have no equivalent anywhere else in Central Asia.

 

There are two ways to reach Termez. The most convenient option is a domestic flight from Tashkent. However, if you travel with me by car from Samarkand, the journey itself becomes an unforgettable part of the experience.

 

Along the way we will visit the mountain town of Baysun, one of the most authentic corners of Uzbekistan, where centuries-old traditions and the traditional way of life are still carefully preserved. We will then stop in the ancient village of Sayrob, famous for its magnificent Oriental plane trees (chinar), some of which are over a thousand years old.

Few places in the world can boast a story as remarkable as this. The thousand-year-old oriental plane tree of Sayrob is far more than a natural monument - it is a living witness to history. Thanks to the enormous natural hollow inside its massive trunk, a school once operated within the tree itself. It is hard to imagine a more extraordinary classroom: children learned their lessons inside a living tree that was already several centuries old at the time. In later years, the hollow served as a library, the village council office, and even a small shop. Today, it houses a small museum where visitors can discover the history of Sayrob and its people.

From there, our route crosses spectacular mountain passes before gradually descending into the warm valleys of southern Uzbekistan.

 

Termez is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. For more than two thousand years it served as an important commercial, cultural and religious center on the Great Silk Road. Today it is a modern, green city situated on the banks of the Amu Darya River, only a few kilometers from the Afghan border.

 

 

Surkhandarya is considered the heart of Uzbekistan's Buddhist heritage. The region preserves the remains of ancient monasteries, temples, stupas and settlements, providing remarkable evidence that Buddhism flourished here nearly two thousand years ago. During the tour we will explore the region's most important archaeological sites, including the Buddhist monasteries of Fayaz-Tepa and Kara-Tepa, as well as the world-famous Termez Archaeological Museum, whose outstanding collection includes Hellenistic, Kushan and Buddhist artifacts.

 

The region is equally fascinating for those interested in the campaigns of Alexander the Great. Following his conquest of Bactria in the 4th century BC, numerous Hellenistic cities and fortresses appeared along the Amu Darya River. Many of these sites are still being excavated today, revealing the lasting influence of ancient Greek civilization in Central Asia.

 

One of the highlights of the tour is the ancient city of Kampyrtepa, an extensive archaeological complex that many scholars associate with Alexander the Great's military campaigns. Situated on the banks of the Amu Darya, Kampyrtepa once served as an important river port on the Silk Road. From here, the opposite bank of the river – Afghanistan - is clearly visible.

 

Surkhandarya is renowned not only for its Buddhist monuments but also for some of Uzbekistan's most revered Islamic shrines. We will visit the mausoleums of distinguished Islamic scholars and Sufi saints that have attracted pilgrims from across the Muslim world for centuries.

 

Among them is the mausoleum of Imam At-Tirmidhi, one of the greatest hadith scholars in Islamic history and the author of Jami' At-Tirmidhi, one of the six canonical collections of hadith recognized in Sunni Islam.

 

Another unforgettable aspect of the journey is the proximity of Afghanistan. Termez is often referred to as the gateway to the country. We will see the famous Friendship Bridge spanning the Amu Darya River, linking Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, as well as the International Trade Center where Afghan entrepreneurs conduct business. Here you can purchase products imported from Afghanistan, admire the country's famously decorated trucks, and, if you wish, speak with their drivers - offering a unique opportunity to experience Afghan culture without crossing the international border.

 

During the journey you will also discover the nature of Uzbekistan's southernmost region. Thanks to its exceptionally mild climate, Surkhandarya is famous for its pomegranates, figs, lemons, pistachios and many other subtropical crops, while spring arrives here weeks earlier than in the rest of the country.
