The journey begins on the banks of the mighty Amu Darya, one of Asia's greatest rivers, which for thousands of years has served as a natural frontier between civilizations and empires. Crossing the river via the famous Friendship Bridge, built by Soviet engineers in 1982, you will pass over one of the most important road and railway connections between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

The first settlement on the Afghan side is Hairatan, the country's largest international land transport hub. A significant share of Afghanistan's trade with the countries of Central Asia passes through this strategically important border crossing.

From here, the road continues across the vast Bactrian Plain, the heartland of ancient Bactria, one of the greatest historical regions of the ancient East. More than two thousand years ago, the armies of Alexander the Great marched across these lands. Later, prosperous cities of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom flourished here, followed by the spread of Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and eventually Islam.

's fourth-largest city and the spiritual capital of the country's north. At its heart stands the magnificent Blue Mosque (Shrine of Hazrat Ali), widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Islamic monuments in the world. According to a long-standing tradition, this is believed to be the burial place of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph, although historians do not consider this tradition to be historically established. Its breathtaking turquoise domes, exquisite mosaics, and spacious courtyards make this architectural masterpiece one of Afghanistan's most iconic landmarks.

After exploring Mazar-i-Sharif, we continue to the legendary city of Balkh, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth, with a history stretching back more than 2,500 years. Often referred to as the "Mother of Cities" (Umm al-Bilad), Balkh was the capital of ancient Bactria, later became one of the principal cities of the Kushan Empire, and subsequently developed into one of the leading centers of Islamic scholarship and culture.

For centuries, Balkh was renowned far beyond Asia. Distinguished theologians, scholars, and poets lived here, while, according to one tradition, the great Persian poet and philosopher Jalal ad-Din Rumi was born nearby.

Before the arrival of Islam, Balkh was one of the most important centers of both Buddhism and Zoroastrianism along the Silk Road.

During the city tour, you will explore the surviving ancient city walls, the remains of the historic citadel, medieval mausoleums, historic mosques, and the famous Khwaja Parsa Mosque. You will also visit the archaeological site of Noh Gunbad (Nine Domes), the oldest surviving Islamic monument in Afghanistan, constructed during the 9th century. Although much of the structure has been destroyed, its remarkable carved stucco decoration and elegant columns still demonstrate the exceptional architectural achievements of the early Islamic period.
