Duration: 1 day
This private day trip takes you from Andijan in Uzbekistan across the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border to Osh , the ancient city in southern Kyrgyzstan .
The city offers a fascinating mixture of history and everyday life: the sacred Sulayman-Too mountain, one of the most important Islamic pilgrimage sites in Central Asia , the lively traditional bazaar, Uzbek-influenced culture and cuisine, and the remains of the Soviet city that developed here during the 20th century.
We will leave Andijan in the morning and drive to the Uzbek–Kyrgyz border.
After completing the border formalities, we will continue to Osh . The journey is relatively short, making Osh one of the easiest international destinations to visit from the Fergana Valley .
Crossing the border also gives you the opportunity to experience something that is difficult to appreciate on a conventional tour: within a few hours, you move from Uzbekistan into Kyrgyzstan while remaining in the same historical and cultural environment of the Fergana Valley .
Our first major stop will be Sulayman-Too, the sacred mountain rising directly above the center of Osh .
The mountain has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit some of its sacred sites and the historical and archaeological museum located inside the mountain.
From the mountain, we can also enjoy views over the city and see how rapidly Osh is changing.
For a visitor, this makes Osh particularly interesting. You can see a traditional Central Asian city developing rapidly before your eyes, while many layers of its earlier history are still visible in its streets.
One of the less obvious but fascinating sides of Osh is its Soviet heritage.
During the Soviet period, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, the city acquired numerous public buildings, monuments, murals and large-scale mosaics. A number of these works have survived and can still be seen around the city.
This makes the surviving Soviet mosaics, monuments and buildings particularly valuable for anyone interested in the history of the former Soviet Union .
After visiting Sulayman-Too, we will explore the lively local bazaar and walk through the central part of Osh .
The bazaar is one of the best places to experience the everyday atmosphere of the city. Rather than being simply a tourist attraction, it remains an important part of local life, with fresh produce, spices, bread, dried fruits, household goods and traditional products.
We will also walk or drive through the central streets, where the different layers of Osh 's history can be seen side by side.
Depending on your interests and the time available, I can show you some of the city's lesser-known Soviet-era buildings, mosaics and monuments in addition to the main attractions.
This day trip is an excellent way to add Kyrgyzstan to your Uzbekistan journey without spending several days travelling through the country.
You will experience two countries, cross an international border, visit one of the oldest cities of Central Asia, see the sacred Sulayman-Too, explore a traditional bazaar and discover a fascinating mixture of ancient Central Asian culture, Soviet heritage and rapidly developing modern Kyrgyzstan - all in one day.
