Two-Day Afghanistan Tour from Uzbekistan

 

This is a journey to Mazar-i-Sharif, the main city of northern Afghanistan, and Balkh, one of the oldest and most historically important cities in the region, traditionally known as the “Mother of Cities.”

It is one of the most fascinating, contrasting, and unforgettable journeys in my collection of tours.

 

The tour begins in Termez, the southernmost city of Uzbekistan, where the presence of Afghanistan can already be felt. Located on the northern bank of the Amu Darya River, Termez has been connected with the lands of present-day Afghanistan for thousands of years.

Today, the area around Termez is also an important point of cross-border trade.

The Airitom Free Trade and Economic Zone has been established near the Afghan border, where Afghanistan and Uzbekistan traders participate in cross-border commerce.

Nearby stands the Friendship Bridge, the main crossing point between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan in this area.

 

Termez is easily accessible from Tashkent by regular flights and trains. It can also be reached by train or car from Samarkand and other cities of Uzbekistan.

For travellers exploring Uzbekistan, a visit to Afghanistan can be an extraordinary addition to their journey, offering a rare opportunity to experience two neighbouring countries with very different modern realities and a deeply interconnected history.

 

This tour is ideal for travellers who want to discover the historic cities of northern Afghanistan while also seeing something of everyday life in the country today.

 

Afghans are well known for their hospitality, warmth, and generosity. During the journey, you will have opportunities to meet local people, walk through the busy streets and markets of Mazar-i-Sharif, and experience the atmosphere of a country that remains largely unexplored by international travellers.

 

One of the most striking aspects of this journey is the contrast between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Although the two countries are separated by an international border, they share centuries of history, cultural connections, trade routes, and the waters of the Amu Darya.

To understand this contrast, we also need to look at the history of Central Asia during the nineteenth century and the period known as the Great Game. The Russian and British Empires competed for influence across Central Asia.

 

This two-day journey is therefore much more than a sightseeing trip. It is an opportunity to cross a modern international border while travelling through a landscape shaped by ancient civilizations, empires, religions, trade routes, and the geopolitical struggles of the modern era.

 

 

 

 

08:00 - Transfer to the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan border

We cross the Friendship Bridge over the Amu Darya and enter Afghanistan.

 

   

09:30 - Hairatan, Afghanistan

Arrival in Hairatan, the Afghan border town. From here, we continue by car towards Mazar-i-Sharif.

11:00 - Arrival in Mazar-i-Sharif and sightseeing.

 

Mazar-i-Sharif is one of Afghanistan's largest cities and the principal urban centre of the country's north. Its name means “Noble Shrine” or “Noble Tomb” reflecting the city's profound religious significance.

The city is best known for the magnificent Shrine of Hazrat Ali, commonly called the Blue Mosque because of its extraordinary blue-tiled architecture. According to local tradition, the shrine contains the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. Although the historical attribution is disputed, the shrine has for centuries been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Afghanistan.

 

 

Explore the city and visit its most important landmark:

The Blue Mosque is one of the most spectacular examples of Islamic architecture in Afghanistan and the spiritual heart of the city.

 

13:00 - Lunch

Lunch at a local restaurant, with an opportunity to experience traditional Afghan cuisine.

14:00 - Check-in at the hotel. Check-in and time for a short rest.

16:00 - Walking tour of central Mazar-i-Sharif.

In the afternoon, we explore the central streets and shopping areas of the city. This is an opportunity to see everyday life in Mazar-i-Sharif, visit local shops and markets, and meet local residents.

 

  

19:00 - Dinner at a local restaurant.

Free time. Overnight in Mazar-i-Sharif.

 

 

 

09:00 - Drive to Balkh.

We leave Mazar-i-Sharif and travel by car to the ancient city of Balkh.

 

Balkh was the capital of the ancient region of Bactria and one of the most important centers of trade, culture, religion, and political power in the wider region.

The history of Balkh stretches back for more than two and a half millennia. The city was associated with the rise of ancient Persian empires and later became part of the world of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic kingdoms that followed his conquests.

Over the centuries, Balkh was connected with Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and Islam. It flourished along the ancient trade routes linking Central Asia with Iran, India, and China and became an important centre of learning and spirituality.

 

   

10:00 - Sightseeing in ancient Balkh.

Explore some of the most significant historical monuments in and around Balkh, including:

   

The archaeological landscape of Balkh provides a unique insight into the many civilizations that have shaped northern Afghanistan.

13:00 - Return to Mazar-i-Sharif

Return to Mazar-i-Sharif by car.

13:30 - Lunch at a local restaurant.

14:30 - Transfer to Hairatan. Drive towards the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan border.

16:00 - Border crossing and return to Uzbekistan.

Cross the border via the Friendship Bridge and return to Termez, Uzbekistan.

 

Important: Please allow additional time for the border crossing from Afghanistan into Uzbekistan. Customs and immigration procedures on the Uzbek side may take longer than expected, depending on the number of travellers and current border procedures.

18:00 - Transfer to Termez. End of the tour.

 

Important: This tour requires crossing an international border and entering Afghanistan. The itinerary, border procedures, security arrangements, and travel conditions may change depending on current regulations and circumstances.

All necessary arrangements for the Afghanistan portion of the journey should be confirmed in advance. Travellers should ensure that they have the appropriate visa or entry permission for Afghanistan and meet all current requirements for returning to Uzbekistan.

The exact timing of the itinerary may also change due to border formalities, road conditions, security requirements, or other circumstances beyond my control.
