Samarkand to Seven Lakes Tour – Fann Mountains Day Trip

A journey from Samarkand to the Seven Lakes in the mountains of Tajikistan can be arranged as either a one-day or a two-day tour, depending on your pace and interests.

The two-day itinerary allows us to take our time exploring ancient Panjakent, one of the oldest cities in the region. Along the way, we will visit Sarazm, an ancient settlement with a history dating back more than 5,000 years, followed by the Panjakent Archaeological Museum, which houses unique finds from the Sogdian period.

In the city itself, we will see the monument to Rudaki, regarded as the founder of classical Persian poetry, and take a walk through the streets of Panjakent, where colourful Soviet-era mosaics have survived on the facades of residential buildings. We will also visit the lively local bazaar to get a glimpse of everyday life in the city.

One of the highlights will be a walk through the archaeological excavations of ancient Panjakent, once a prosperous Sogdian city where archaeological research is still being carried out today. Here, we will see streets uncovered by archaeologists, the ruins of houses and temples, and other remains of the ancient city. At the small museum beside the excavations, we will see artefacts discovered at the site, including fragments of ancient wall paintings.

After dinner, we will stay overnight in a cozy hotel. The following morning, we will continue our journey to the Seven Lakes, and in the evening return to Samarkand.

The one-day tour involves an early departure from Samarkand, before 8:00 a.m. By around 11:00 a.m., breathtaking mountain landscapes and the first lakes will appear before us, shimmering in the sunlight in shades of blue and green.

The road to the Seven Lakes is an adventure in itself. First, we pass through Panjakent, followed by fertile fields where locals cultivate the land and harvest their crops. As we climb higher, we reach the foothills and high-mountain areas with authentic mountain villages. Here, we can stop to meet the hospitable residents, while children happily greet visitors, accept small treats, and offer traditional handmade crafts such as embroidery, jewelry, and other local items.

The Seven Lakes are not a poetic exaggeration. In the Fann Mountains, there are indeed seven lakes rising in a cascade along a narrow valley. Each lake has its own color and character, ranging from soft turquoise to deep emerald green. According to many travelers, the most impressive lakes are the upper ones - the higher you go, the wilder and more majestic the nature becomes.

We will stop at each lake, choose the best spots for photography, and at the highest and most scenic seventh lake, enjoy a peaceful walk along the shore, breathtaking panoramic views, and the pure mountain air.

The return journey will be just as fascinating: familiar landscapes will reveal themselves from a new perspective, and the light of the setting sun will give the mountains a special charm.

Arrival back in Samarkand is planned for around 8:00 p.m.
